Ten Thousand Villages Celebrates in Style |
On September 27, Cameron Village kicked off fall with a three-day Style Authority event. From Friday through Sunday, shoppers were treated to trunk shows featuring the latest fall fashions, discounts and free gifts. Ten Thousand Villages hosted a variety of events throughout the weekend, including a wine and cheese tasting sponsored by Whole Foods Market. Customers sipped samples of fairly traded white or red wine and savored a selection of locally made cheeses. Vicky Montague and Julie Ross of the Fiddle Chics accompanied the tasting with the sounds of Irish traditional music.
On Saturday, Ten Thousand Villages gave customers a break from their shopping with complimentary 5-minute chair massages, thanks to students from the ECPI massage program. Later in the day, Kyley Schmidt, of fair trade wholesaler Peace Goods, presented a trunk show of scarves and shawls. Made from wild Madagascar silk, the richly colored fabric is made with natural dyes and spun with a nubby texture. In addition to preserving this historic silk art form, the fabric provides a steady long-term income for more than 100 weavers and their families in the small rural community of Soatanana in Madagascar.
By the end of the Style Authority weekend, the fall season was officially in full swing. Even better? The holidays are just around the corner.

Kids
Multicultural Day
2007 |
On Saturday, August 18, Ten Thousand Villages celebrated its Sixth annual Kids Multicultural Fun Day. More than 50 children and families showed up for a full day of games, crafts and snacks. Outside, kids got creative with chalk as they turned the sidewalk into spectacular displays of Rangoli art. Inside, kids lined up for face painting and henna tattoos or headed to the craft center to make "critter" musical shakers, prayer flags and recycled paper necklaces. But by all accounts-both the children and their parents—the highlight of the day was the drum circle. For more than an hour, kids shook tambourines, pounded drums and danced to the rhythmic drum beats. A fun way to spend the day, and a great way to learn about new cultures.
